Dear Colleagues,
As I reflect on my first year at the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC), I am filled with tremendous gratitude, praise, and optimism for what lies ahead. The Commonwealth’s life sciences ecosystem continues to set the global standard for excellence in discovery, innovation, and collaboration. The MLSC remains deeply committed to sustaining that leadership and driving continued progress. We have achieved a great deal as a team, translating to ongoing progress for our colleagues and the citizens of Massachusetts.
This year marked an important period of transition and growth. We flexed our team’s structure. We welcomed new members to our Board of Directors, incorporating their diverse expertise and perspectives as we enter the next phase of our organization’s strategic journey. Notable as a new Board member is the Secretary of Economic Development, Eric Paley, whose leadership and collaboration are already having an impact on the connection between the MLSC’s mission and the Commonwealth’s broader economic vision. Welcome Eric!
The past year also saw the implementation of the Mass Leads Act by the Healey-Driscoll Administration, made possible with the support of the Massachusetts Legislature. This includes a $500 million capital reauthorization of the state’s Life Sciences Initiative over 10 years, an expansion of our Tax Incentive program designed to spur job creation and growth in the life sciences industry, and a $100 million authorization to create the Massachusetts AI Hub which will boost innovation and attract AI talent to the state.
With the 3rd reauthorization of funding for the life sciences in Massachusetts, we are embracing MLSC 3.0, a forward-looking strategic plan to guide our next decade of investment and impact. Governor Healey continued the endorsement of the MLSC by expanding upon the 1.0 and 2.0 plans signed by Governors Patrick and Baker, respectively. MLSC 3.0 is built upon four core ideological imperatives: Equity and Access, Geographic Expansion, Infrastructure and Competitiveness, and AI for Life Sciences. These imperatives are the tactical foundation of this annual report, and they will reinforce Massachusetts’ position as the #1 place for companies to grow, students to learn, and breakthroughs to flourish.
